Big Bowl Update

There were some great results at the Big Bowl XI tournament last weekend.
Liam Fleming and Scott McKenzie were playing with the Scotland Chieftains. They had a tough start, losing their first three games. 34 – 6 to the Alerod Armadillos (Danish team), 18 – 6 to the Ljubljana Killer Bees (Slovenia), 14 – 6 to the Las Palmas Atlantic Devils (Spain, 10th). Then it all seemed to click. They won their last two games of day 1. 28 – 6 v Badener Bad. Greifs and 26 – 6 v Frankfurt Purple Flags. That meant they finished fourth in their group, so the highest they could achieve was 25th.
On day 2 the winning streak continued with wins against Moscow Toughnuts (18 – 14), 30 – 0 against Northampton Stormer and 13 – 0 against Augsburg Rooks. After a poor start they went 5 – 0. Well done guys.
Fraser Thomson, Callum Woods and Kevin Woods were playing for the London Barbarians. A team made up of GB Gold and Silver Lions players.
Their first game didn’t go so well either. They lost to the Kirkcaldy Bulls 13 – 6. However, they seemed to wake up after that and started a winning run of their own. 21 – 6 v Wurtzburg Uni, 26 – 6 against Maichingen Mustangs, 12 – 6 against Zyuzino Zombies (Russia) and 35 – 0 against Vechta Uni Fighters. That last win put them in the top 16 bracket on day 2.
Day 2, and the Barbarians continued where they left off. An impressive 34 – 7 win over the host team, Walldorf Wanderers put them in the top 8. A good win against a bad tempered Pennsylvania NP Flag (20 – 12) put them into the semi-finals. They were in good company with two Danish teams and last year’s winners MassFlag from the USA.
Unfortunately, they just didn’t have enough left in the tank to overcome the Copenhagen Barbarians (20 – 7) who ended runners up and Alerod Armadilos who pipped them 19 – 13 for 3rd spot. 4th place was still a fantastic result. Well done.
