Broncos Have to Settle for Second Place

After their first defeat of the 2017 league season, 41 – 20 to the Glasgow Hornets, it seems likely the Broncos will end the regular season as runners up in the HNC. With all of their fixtures complete the Broncos have to wait to see if the Hornets can win any two of their three outstanding fixtures against the Comets, Spartans or Renegades. At this point, the Hornets look like they will complete the regular season undefeated.
In their game with the, the Broncos couldn’t have had a better start, driving the field for Scott McKenzie to throw a TD pass to Fraser Thomson, then the pair hooked up again for the XP. Follow that with a sack from Matty Ross, and a hold on defence..
Unfortunately, the Broncos couldn’t capitalise and the Hornets were next on the score board with a Grant McClennan TD. The XP tied the game.
Then disaster struck for the Broncos as a collision between Fraser Thomson and Kevin Woods took Fraser out of the game. By the time the Broncos sorted themselves out, they were behind to another McClennan TD. To make matters worse just before the half, Kevin Woods tipped the ball away from one Hornets receiver, just to have it fall into the hands of Richie Moore in the end-zone.
After the half, the Broncos just didn’t seem to be themselves and the Hornets scored with three TDs in a row before Callum Woods ran the length of the field for a Broncos TD, then threw his second XP of the season to his brother Kevin.
Looking ahead, the Broncos are now hoping that the Hornets win out, because that would almost definitely mean the Northern Regional Playoffs will be in Glasgow.
