Just One More Week…

Sunday 16th of September will see the final action of the BAFA 2018 League season. While we already know that the Baker Street Buttonhookers are the BAFA British Premier Champions, with the Glasgow Hornets as runners-up, and the London Smoke are the BAFA British Division 1 Champions, with carnegie Flag as the runners up, there are still a few games to be played.

Next week, at Bellevue Sports Village in Manchester, the Broncos will be playing in the BAFA National Plate Championship and the Colts will be playing for a place in the BAFA Premier League.

The Plate Championship is a day long tournament for the best of the teams who didn’t make the National Finals. While the Broncos will make an appearance in the competition, the timing could have been better.

At the start of the season, the Broncos went with a ten man squad, knowing that they could count on some Colts to play up if they were short manned at any point. They didn’t reckon with a “season from hell”.
We lost Scott McCracken early on, back to Carnegie. Scott McKenzie injured in Aberdeen, and still suffering the effects. Fraser Thomson AND Kevin Woods going down in Germany, with Fraser still out and Kevin arrives home the day AFTER the event.
Callum Woods has been playing injured for the majority of the season. Now Matty Ross, Luke Morrice and Andy Brown are all unavailable.
What does that leave? Liam Fleming, Kevin Simpson, though he is playing through the pain of shin splints, and Jimmy Thomson. With Scott McKenzie at QB it is going to be a long hard day in Manchester, playing with four players.

On a more positive note, there are more Colts players available for their game than the last game day. As well as Louise Donnelly, Mark Wallace, Gordon McSherry, Steven Cliffe, David Mooney and Billy Corner who put in a great effort at Sheffield, Kristopher Walker, Joe McIlwaine and Lewis Carson will be travelling south. They will get a warm up game against the Birmingham Lions, then play against the Clyde Comets for the chance to play in the BAFA Premier HNC league next year. As Andy Brown, their starting QB all season, is unavailable, Steven Cliffe will once again be at the helm. Even with a bigger squad, this could also be a tough day.

Good luck guys. Enjoy the day.
